It is and it was! The elephant is so big and strong, and is not tied to anything, so I was extra cautious. Its skin is rough and thick, but warm. The tip of the trunk is something between a nose and a hand, and it's so soft and moist. And the eyes are like an old person's, with really long eyelashes. I loved him. I wonder how expensive it would be to keep a temple elephant at home? I'd ask visitors and friends to bring a lot of coconuts.

HA! That would be excellent!

Dear Dushka,

What a wonderful experience! Now, it's something to look forward to, when I go to India next year.

Much love,

M

The elephant blessing is one of the most charming things I've ever seen. But a question comes to mind. After standing in the hot sun all day, on the blazing hot pavement, and proffering blessings, what's in it for the elephant?

While I am a firm believer that wild animals belong in the wild (hence my hesitation in getting close to him) this elephant gets washed and fed and treated well. He's 54 years old. It's better than the fate of so many others in India.

How fabulous. I'm going to ask Emma whether we can get an elephant. That would stop the homeless people peeing on our doorstep for sure!

And we can have elephant play dates!

Amazing footage!! Did it feel like a vacuum cleaner on your head?

LOL!
No. There was no suction. He was petting me.
